Due to how the MONOTONIC_RAW accumulation logic was handled,
there is the potential for a 1ns discontinuity when we do
accumulations. This small discontinuity has for the most part
gone un-noticed, but since ARM64 enabled CLOCK_MONOTONIC_RAW
in their vDSO clock_gettime implementation, we've seen failures
with the inconsistency-check test in kselftest.
This patch addresses the issue by using the same sub-ns
accumulation handling that CLOCK_MONOTONIC uses, which avoids
the issue for in-kernel users.
Since the ARM64 vDSO implementation has its own clock_gettime
calculation logic, this patch reduces the frequency of errors,
but failures are still seen. The ARM64 vDSO will need to be
updated to include the sub-nanosecond xtime_nsec values in its
calculation for this issue to be completely fixed.

for_each_cpu() unintuitively reports CPU0 as set independent of the actual
cpumask content on UP kernels. This causes an unexpected PIT interrupt
storm on a UP kernel running in an SMP virtual machine on Hyper-V, and as
a result, the virtual machine can suffer from a strange random delay of 1~20
minutes during boot-up, and sometimes it can hang forever.
Protect if by checking whether the cpumask is empty before entering the
for_each_cpu() loop.

When running certain database workload on a high-end system with many
CPUs, it was found that spinlock contention in the sigprocmask syscalls
became a significant portion of the overall CPU cycles as shown below.

Looking further into the swapcontext function in glibc, it was found that
the function always call sigprocmask() without checking if there are
changes in the signal mask.
A check was added to the __set_current_blocked() function to avoid taking
the sighand->siglock spinlock if there is no change in the signal mask.
This will prevent unneeded spinlock contention when many threads are
trying to call sigprocmask().
With this patch applied, the spinlock contention in sigprocmask() was
gone.

sign_extend32 counts the sign bit parameter from 0, not from 1. So we
have to use "11" for 12th bit, not "12".
This mistake means we have not allowed negative op and cmp args since
commit 30d6e0a4190d ("futex: Remove duplicated code and fix undefined

There is code duplicated over all architecture's headers for
futex_atomic_op_inuser. Namely op decoding, access_ok check for uaddr,
and comparison of the result.
Remove this duplication and leave up to the arches only the needed
assembly which is now in arch_futex_atomic_op_inuser.
This effectively distributes the Will Deacon's arm64 fix for undefined
behaviour reported by UBSAN to all architectures. The fix was done in
commit 5f16a046f8e1 (arm64: futex: Fix undefined behaviour with
FUTEX_OP_OPARG_SHIFT usage). Look there for an example dump.
And as suggested by Thomas, check for negative oparg too, because it was
also reported to cause undefined behaviour report.
Note that s390 removed access_ok check in d12a29703 ("s390/uaccess:
remove pointless access_ok() checks") as access_ok there returns true.
We introduce it back to the helper for the sake of simplicity (it gets
optimized away anyway).

Commit 65d8fc777f6d ("futex: Remove requirement for lock_page() in
get_futex_key()") removed an unnecessary lock_page() with the
side-effect that page->mapping needed to be treated very carefully.
Two defensive warnings were added in case any assumption was missed and
the first warning assumed a correct application would not alter a
mapping backing a futex key. Since merging, it has not triggered for
any unexpected case but Mark Rutland reported the following bug
triggering due to the first warning.

The fact that it's a bug instead of a warning was due to an unrelated
arm64 problem, but the warning itself triggered because the underlying
mapping changed.
This is an application issue but from a kernel perspective it's a
recoverable situation and the warning is unnecessary so this patch
removes the warning. The warning may potentially be triggered with the
following test program from Mark although it may be necessary to adjust

Move the calculations of values after the allocation in case the
allocation fails. This avoids wasting effort in the rare case that it
fails, but more importantly saves us extra logic to release the tty
ref.

The regex match function regex_match_front() in the tracing filter logic,
was fixed to test just the pattern length from testing the entire test
string. That is, it went from strncmp(str, r->pattern, len) to
strcmp(str, r->pattern, r->len).
The issue is that str is not guaranteed to be nul terminated, and if r->len
is greater than the length of str, it can access more memory than is
allocated.
The solution is to add a simple test if (len < r->len) return 0.

If the get_callchain_buffers fails to allocate the buffer it will
decrease the nr_callchain_events right away.
There's no point of checking the allocation error for
nr_callchain_events > 1. Removing that check.

Tracepoint should only warn when a kernel API user does not respect the
required preconditions (e.g. same tracepoint enabled twice, or called
to remove a tracepoint that does not exist).
Silence warning in out-of-memory conditions, given that the error is
returned to the caller.
This ensures that out-of-memory error-injection testing does not trigger
warnings in tracepoint.c, which were seen by syzbot.

When iterating through a map, we need to find a key that does not exist
in the map so map_get_next_key will give us the first key of the map.
This often requires a lot of guessing in production systems.
This patch makes map_get_next_key return the first key when the key
pointer in the parameter is NULL.

Use "proc_dointvec_minmax" instead of "proc_dointvec" to check the input
value from user-space.
If not, we can set a big value and some vars will overflow like

If the next_freq field of struct sugov_policy is set to UINT_MAX,
it shouldn't be used for updating the CPU frequency (this is a
special "invalid" value), but after commit b7eaf1aab9f8 (cpufreq:
schedutil: Avoid reducing frequency of busy CPUs prematurely) it
may be passed as the new frequency to sugov_update_commit() in
sugov_update_single().
Fix that by adding an extra check for the special UINT_MAX value
of next_freq to sugov_update_single().

Currently looking at /proc/<pid>/status or statm, there is no way to
distinguish shmem pages from pages mapped to a regular file (shmem pages
are mapped to /dev/zero), even though their implication in actual memory
use is quite different.
The internal accounting currently counts shmem pages together with
regular files. As a preparation to extend the userspace interfaces,
this patch adds MM_SHMEMPAGES counter to mm_rss_stat to account for
shmem pages separately from MM_FILEPAGES. The next patch will expose it
to userspace - this patch doesn't change the exported values yet, by
adding up MM_SHMEMPAGES to MM_FILEPAGES at places where MM_FILEPAGES was
used before. The only user-visible change after this patch is the OOM
killer message that separates the reported "shmem-rss" from "file-rss".

ipc_log_string takes up a lot of CPU cycles for logging that is not used
in production. However, we need the infrastructure of ipc_logging in
order to capture Bluetooth crashdumps. Therefore, just do nothing when
asked to log a string.

We've got a bug report indicating a kernel panic at booting on an x86-32
system, and it turned out to be the invalid PCI resource assigned after
reallocation. __find_resource() first aligns the resource start address
and resets the end address with start+size-1 accordingly, then checks
whether it's contained. Here the end address may overflow the integer,
although resource_contains() still returns true because the function
validates only start and end address. So this ends up with returning an
invalid resource (start > end).
There was already an attempt to cover such a problem in the commit
47ea91b4052d ("Resource: fix wrong resource window calculation"), but
this case is an overseen one.
This patch adds the validity check of the newly calculated resource for
avoiding the integer overflow problem.

When dealing with key handling for shared futexes, we can drastically reduce
the usage/need of the page lock. 1) For anonymous pages, the associated futex
object is the mm_struct which does not require the page lock. 2) For inode
based, keys, we can check under RCU read lock if the page mapping is still
valid and take reference to the inode. This just leaves one rare race that
requires the page lock in the slow path when examining the swapcache.
Additionally realtime users currently have a problem with the page lock being
contended for unbounded periods of time during futex operations.

Now any other task trying to lock that page will have to wait until
task A gets scheduled back in, which is an unbound time.
With this patch, we pretty much have a lockless futex_get_key().
Experiments show that this patch can boost/speedup the hashing of shared
futexes with the perf futex benchmarks (which is good for measuring such
change) by up to 45% when there are high (> 100) thread counts on a 60 core
Westmere. Lower counts are pretty much in the noise range or less than 10%,
but mid range can be seen at over 30% overall throughput (hash ops/sec).
This makes anon-mem shared futexes much closer to its private counterpart.

Further investigation showed that the lock contention here is pmd_lock().
The task_numa_work() function makes sure that only one thread is let to perform
the work in a single scan period (via cmpxchg), but if there's a thread with
mmap_sem locked for writing for several periods, multiple threads in
task_numa_work() can build up a convoy waiting for mmap_sem for read and then
all get unblocked at once.
This patch changes the down_read() to the trylock version, which prevents the
build up. For a workload experiencing mmap_sem contention, it's probably better
to postpone the NUMA balancing work anyway. This seems to have fixed the soft
lockups involving pmd_lock(), which is in line with the convoy theory.

alloc_pidmap() advances pid_namespace::last_pid. When first pid
allocation fails, then next created process will have pid 2 and
pid_ns_prepare_proc() won't be called. So, pid_namespace::proc_mnt will
never be initialized (not to mention that there won't be a child
reaper).

We may fix this by restore of last_pid in 0 or by prohibiting of futher
allocations. Since there was a similar issue in Oleg Nesterov's commit
314a8ad0f18a ("pidns: fix free_pid() to handle the first fork failure").
and it was fixed via prohibiting allocation, let's follow this way, and
do the same.

The tty field was missing from AUDIT_LOGIN events.
Refactor code to create a new function audit_get_tty(), using it to
replace the call in audit_log_task_info() and to add it to
audit_log_set_loginuid(). Lock and bump the kref to protect it, adding
audit_put_tty() alias to decrement it.

Fix kprobes to set(recover) RWX bits correctly on trampoline
buffer before releasing it. Releasing readonly page to
module_memfree() crash the kernel.
Without this fix, if kprobes user register a bunch of kprobes
in function body (since kprobes on function entry usually
use ftrace) and unregister it, kernel hits a BUG and crash.

Annoyingly, modify_user_hw_breakpoint() unnecessarily complicates the
modification of a breakpoint - simplify it and remove the pointless
local variables.
Also update the stale Docbook while at it.
